  Dr. Maya Bio

Meet Dr. Sal Maya, dedicated physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)

Most people think of their anesthesiologist as the "doctor behind the mask" who helps them sleep through surgery, or simply overcome their pain; however, few people realize that beyond ensuring the patient's comfort, today's anesthesiologists' are medical specialists who make informed medical judgments to protect patients and immediately diagnose and treat any medical problems that might arise. Today, we meet Dr. Sal Maya a skilled medical physician currently specializing in the field of anesthesia, dividing his time to patient care in the operating room, labor and delivery floor, intensive care unit, and the general care of patients throughout the hospital.

Dr. Maya received his extensive training starting with his undergraduate education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). At UCLA, Dr. Maya graduated with a double major in Neuroscience and Education where he received a solid foundation in the basic sciences as well as fundamental tools for providing excellent patient education. During this time he also spent several years working in clinical research studying the effects of an experimental medication for treating opiate/heroin addiction. After completing his undergraduate education, Dr. Maya spent the following year working as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and with the Los Angeles Police department (LAPD), helping people affected by gamma hydroxy-butyrate, or GHB.

During the next four years, Dr. Maya continued his formal medical training at the UCLA School of Medicine. During this time he continued to build his medical knowledge, and led a clinical research project on the effects of nitrous oxide on the vascular tone of the femoral arteries. During his time in medical school, he also created a preoperative pediatric anesthesia video, which detailed the operative experience for children with anxiety or fear about their upcoming surgery.

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Maya completed his surgical internship at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, CA. During this year, he assisted on many different surgeries and was an active part of the hospital’s physician trauma team. He also spent this year studying breast cancer and showed how young women are more likely diagnosed with more aggressive forms of this cancer. His work in this area earned him the highest honor in the hospital during a scholarly presentation of research projects.

After the completion of his internship, Dr. Maya began his anesthesia residency where he continues to practice at the Massachusetts General Hospital, the third oldest hospital in the United States which consistently ranks as one of the country's best hospitals. There, Dr. Maya continues to provide excellent care for his patients both inside and outside the operating rooms.

Dr. Maya has a long list of awards and honors during his medical career. Some of these include having graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa, receiving the Golden Key National Honors Society Award, being an active part of the Sigma Xi, Scientific Research Society and receiving the American Medical Student Association Leadership Award. He was also given the Ann Bauman Memorial Award upon graduation from the UCLA School of Medicine. He has made many presentations and has produced a long list of publications in the medical literature.

We look forward to having Dr. Maya host our monthly “Ask the Dr.’s” and hope that all of you can take advantage of the opportunity to ask Dr. Maya all of your medical questions.
